The year is 2000. Dreamcast (one of the best consoles EVAH btw) was still with us. And Ryo Hazuki witnesses his father getting his ass kicked and getting murdered.
And so begins one of the best game ever. Shenmue. Controlling Ryo you go around kicking ass and taking names in pursuit of Lan Di.
The freaking game was awesome. It had a weather systems and was hailed by many as a masterpiece.
- It even let you drive forklifts. FORKLIFTS! -
Personally this was a game that marked me for life. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
The plot was great, the gameplay fun and the sheer amount of thing you could do in the game was just mind blowing.
The freaking game was the most expensive video game in its time, with a production cost of $47 million. That's the equivalent of $64 million in 2011.
In 2001 Shenmue 2 came around. The second chapter of the saga begins when Ryo, the main protagonist of the series, arrives in Hong Kong in order to locate Master Lishao Tao.
It goes in a crescendo where you keep getting better and better and keep discovering things to do in game
After much ass kicking, rescue scenes and ancient orders mumbo jumbo our hero is instructed to go to a village.
At the village he finds a sword, combines it with a mirror and...
Want to know what happens next?
Where's the rest? What rest? There isn't any. The game ends there and there is no sequel.
Sega originally planned to release Shenmue III, but over the years many have speculated that the game may never see the light of day.
Think of it like you thought of the console it was in. Dreamcast was great. But it died.
But this whole situation is dumb. The entire storyline of the Shenmue saga is already finished, yet the final chapters (which would have made up its sequels) never went into production.
So what is stopping them? Hell if I know.
Sega says that Shenmue 3 requests are 'taken very seriously'. But "no plans at the moment".
Yeap. Just like that.
But on October 7, 2010 a new Shenmue game was announced.
The hype plane took off with people expecting what they thought was logical: Shenmue 3.
Fans where excited and everyone expected the best. The result?
'Shenmue City' for mobile phones.
- That was totally what fans expected -
8 years in waiting and they announce a spin off. Sure you can see Ryo in the game and you can also collect the Toy capsules. But that's not what everyone is waiting for.
So now we wait.
And wait.
And wait.
For the glorious day that Shenmue 3 will burst into our lives. After all, the creator said: "I think SEGA will let me make it…it's a matter of budget…we have to make it in an affordable way."
That will probably happen when the Dreamcast 2 will be release annihilating all other punny consoles.
- Believe -
There are some motives, I guess, that explain why the game hasn't seen the light of day.
But seriously Sega... Y U NO make Shenmue 3?
